Britain and the EU: Is Britain really a European society? Introduction to the debate
The British debate on the EU is abetted by a peculiar, but broadly shared, mental construction which talks about Britain and then Europe, as if Europe is somewhere else—a place across the sea. The referendum on 23 June is not a referendum about geography. But it is a referendum about Britain’s international relations with its neighbours, and whether it sees itself leading, shaping, or even just sharing, a joint regional European project. These are just some of the issues that will be addressed and discussed at this timely event which brings together high profile speakers and an invited audience from the worlds or politics, research, professional practice, business and charitable organisations.
