Bullying: strategies for staying safe
Dr Hayley Davies (University of Leeds), Fiona Benjamin and Dave Austin (Families Feeling Safe Protective Behaviours Services) have jointly informed and produced this animated video, drawing on research findings from their respective research with children and Protective Behaviours work with children, young people, and families and professionals. This is one of a series of three animations. The animations reflect story-lines that children have discussed in research accounts of their families and they are intended for children, families and for professionals to use in their safeguarding work with children and families. If you would like further information about training in the use of the animations, or resources related to the animations, please contact Fiona Benjamin (fiona@familiesfeelingsafe.co.uk) or Dave Austin (dave@familiesfeelingsafe.co.uk) or visit their website: http://familiesfeelingsafe.co.uk If you would like information about the research that informed the animations, please contact Dr Hayley Davies on h.m.davies@leeds.ac.uk

Desktop Capture Feedback
Antonio Martínez-Arboleda, Principal Teaching Fellow in Spanish at the University of Leeds, explains how he uses Mediasite Desktop Capture for the provision audio-visual feedback to his students and why he recommends it to other practitioners. He also offers some practical advice regarding quality assurance.
Antonio’s method has been tried successfully with students in his Final Year module on Spanish in an Economics and Business Context, but can work well in any subject in HE, including any Sciences and Humanities disciplines.
Audiovisual feedback is particularly suitable for written or video task that have been submitted electronically by students, either through a Virtual Learning Environment or by email, or in any other way.
Similar methods, but with different tools, are being advocated by few institutions such as the University of Derby UK: https://www.derby.ac.uk/about/learning-enhancement/learning-teaching/assessment-feedback/feedback/audio-visual/ and have been tried at De Montfort University https://www.dmu.ac.uk/documents/about-dmu-documents/professional-services/academic-professional-development/conferences-and-events/hea-seminar-10-05-11/studentresponsestoavfeedback100511.pdf
Research has been carried out on the effectiveness of this type of feedback in distance learning courses:
Kathleen Mathieson (2012) Exploring Student Perceptions of Audiovisual Feedback via Screencasting in Online Courses, American Journal of Distance Education, 26:3, 143-156
Kirstie Edwards, Anne-Florence Dujardin, Noel Williams (2012) Screencast Feedback for Essays on a Distance Learning MA in Professional Communication, Journal of Academic Writing, Vol. 2 No. 1 Autumn 2012, 95–126
The work of Soden highlights some of the obstacles found in a UK research-intensive institution for the implementation of screencast feedback:
Bill Soden (2017) The Case of Screencast Feedback: Barriers to the Use of Learning Technology, Innovative Practice in Higher Education, Vol.3 (1) April 2017
Extensive work has been done already on audio feedback (with no screen video capture): http://www.gre.ac.uk/it-and-library/panopto/guidance-for-lecturers/audio-visual-feedback
JISC published a guide on feedback and digital media that may be also of interest: https://www.jisc.ac.uk/guides/using-digital-media-in-new-learning-models/media-enhanced-assessment-submission-and-feedback.
If you would like to contact Antonio, please email him at sllama@leeds.ac.uk or tweet @Toni_M_Arboleda #audiovisualfeedback
The Leeds Language Scholar will be publishing further work on Audiovisual Feedback. http://languagescholar.leeds.ac.uk/

LITE Masterclass: Gen. Y is so last millennium. Here comes Gen. Z by Professor Huxley-Binns
A short podcast introducing the Leeds Institute of Teaching Excellence Masterclass: Gen. Y is so last millennium. Here comes Gen. Z by Professor Rebecca Huxley-Binns.
The challenges and opportunities universities face in how they engage with the next generation of students is the focus of this LITE Masterclass.
Rebecca Huxley-Binns, who is professor of Legal Education and Vice-Provost, Academic Enhancement, at the University of Law, lead the seminar at the University of Leeds.
Generation Z, as they have been coined, consist of those born in 1995 or later. A “Millennial”, or Generation Y, is a person reaching young adulthood around the year 2000.
Professor Huxley-Binns says: "I am not convinced universities have adapted to the challenges and opportunities that teaching Gen. Y brought us, and even if we adapt now, it will be too late. Gen. Z are biting at Gen. Y’s heels to enter higher education (HE) and start their careers."
So, what can we expect of Gen. Z? What expectations do Gen. Z’s have of HE and how are we going to adapt to the challenges of the future?
