Ad-hoc Lecture Capture
This is a short tutorial for staff at the University of Leeds who wish to use Ad-hoc Lecture Capture to record one-off teaching sessions or presentations. Ad-hoc Capture is one of 3 ways of recording digital content using the Lecture Capture Media Management Service. Click on the i bottom right hand corner of your screen to find further information and online resources about various aspects of the service.
Whether you are teaching in a large lecture theatre with full audio and video lecture capture capabilities or you are in smaller seminar room there are presently 270 teaching spaces equipped with Lecture Capture capabilities with more in the pipeline.
If you visit the Student Education website you’ll find a description of all central teaching spaces and the type of lecture capture facilities available.
Starting your ad-hoc recording is a very straight-forward process. Simply log on to the PC in the room. It is important that you log on with your own username and password because you then have ownership of the recording and it will appear in your Mediasite.
Once you have logged on to the PC double click on the Ad-hoc Recorder icon to launch the software. The service knows who you are and where you are. Click on to "let’s start”. Provide a title for your recording. Note that the default duration of any ad-hoc recording is 55 minutes so you may need to changes this. Remember you can edit the title and description of your recording later.
Select begin recording. You will be notified that the recorder has been initialised. Select OK. You will know you are being recorded when the light on the lectern is on.
You can pause the recording at any time by pressing the button for 1 or 2 seconds. You will know when the recording has been paused because the red light will slowly pulsate. To resume your recording press the button again for 1 or 2 seconds. To end the recording press the button for 5 seconds and the light will eventually turn off.
When your recording has been processed you will receive a notification email from Mediasite with a link your recording. You can then review, edit and publish your recording to Minerva or various channels.

Basic Editing of Recordings
Do you know how to add further information to your recordings to help users find your recordings and navigate around your media resources?
Once you receive an email from mediasite notifiying you that your recording is ready to be viewed, edited and approved what do you do next?
This short tutorial outlines the basic steps of simple editing of any recording uploaded into MyMediasite. You can add metadata (information about your recording) to make it more accessible to your learners. Make your recording viewable to students within the VLE. Please visit our online tutorial on "Advanced Editing" which complements this resource. You can view this and other online tutorials by clicking on the small i symbol bottom right hand corner of this recording.
You will learn how to:-
- Access Recordings via Mediasite
- Add Metadata (edit title and description)
- Create Tags (keywords to identify the resource)
- Identify Presenter (you can create your own new title)
- Add Web Resources to recordings
- Make the recordings viewable to modules within the VLE

Benefits of Lecture Capture: Antonio Martinez-Arboleda
How are lecturers employing Lecture Capture at the University of Leeds and what benefits are they reaping?
Antonio Martinez-Arboleda has been using Lecture Capture within the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies to support students in a variety of different ways. He believes that students value the opportunity to revisit material to improve their learning and has used Lecture Capture extensively for final year students on a course entitled "Spanish in an Economic Business Context".
"Learning is three dimensional and sometimes the students have to go back to revisit what they have done," (Antonio, 2015).

Benefits of Lecture Capture: Presented by University of Leeds' Students
The University of Leeds' Lecture Capture and Media Management system aims to support learners and enhance the student experience.
Since 2014 thousands of hours of lecture capture recordings have been published and viewed by University staff and students. Much of this multimedia content is now being shared publicly as outlined by the Digital Strategy for Student Education 2013.
All students can use the media management platform to record their own presentations to share with their supervisors, lecturers, each other, future employers, research partners and members of the public.
James Kinch is a second year student in the School of Mechanical Engineering. He finds lecture capture very useful to revisit learning content, especially during revision time and uses the recordings to test himself when exploring challenging mathematical concepts.
Rozalyn Yorke is studying a BSc in Medical Sciences and uses lecture capture regularly to support her when writing up her notes. The opportunity to revisit lectures gives her the confidence to prioritise her time when pursuing other University commitments.
Samuel Ross is studying in the School of Biology. He has found it helpful to have access to missed lectures. As a final year student Samuel is thinking of his future career plans and it is inevitable that he may need to attend conferences, job searches and events that can improve his career choices. The University's Lecture Capture system therefore helps students like Samuel who need the flexibility to keep up with their studies and research whilst at the same time extending their portfolios and networking with future employers.

Change the Thumbnail Image of Digital Content in Mediasite
This tutorial explains how you can easily change the thumbnail image associated with your digital content. This helps you and your users identify the nature of the content more easily. Occasionally when using scheduled capture or ad-hoc capture the first image may appear as a "black screen" with the words "no signal" showing. Please DO change this especially if your content is going to be made more publicly available such as on VideoLeeds or the University of Leeds YouTube Channel.
1. If you have used a PowerPoint presentation during your recording then you can simply select the "Edit Slides" option in mediasite, choose the slide you want as your thumbnail image and click onto save.
2. If your digital content does not have slides recorded in this way (for example you have created a podcast or uploaded digital media via a mobile or desktop capture) then you can simply go to the "Edit" tab and then "Delivery", browse your computer and choose a relevant image and select save.

Digital Dates: Create Digital Content with Personal Capture
This short presentation is for staff and students who are attending the Digital Dates workshop in March 2016.
It aims to provide a general overview of Personal Capture which participants can watch BEFORE attending this Digital Dates event. This gives us more time to focus on the technology in the short 30 minutes available. Facilitators will also have more time to answer participants' questions. This is therefore an example of a flipped learning activity.

This tutorial is an introduction to VideoLeeds.
VideoLeeds is the new media management channel in which staff can publish multimedia resources for teaching, learning, research and marketing. All University users can publish content directly from mediasite to VideoLeeds.
Content in VideoLeeds is either available to everyone publicly or to logged in users only. This means that some content is only visible to University staff and students. University members can log into VideoLeeds with their university usernames and passwords to preview all content.

External Publishing: University of Leeds YouTube Channel
Staff and students can request to have their digital content published to the University of Leeds YouTube Channel. This is done via Mediasite, the University's Lecture Capture and Media Management system. The University Communications Team authorise the publication of the content and you are then notified by email.

Hardware and Software for Lecture Capture in the Teaching Spaces
Do you know about the 3 blue lights on the Vaddio microphone? Are you wanting to use the visualiser and include it in your lecture capture recording? Why not visit this short online tutorial which sets out to identify some of the equipment you may need to use in the lecture theatres.
There are over 250 teaching spaces equipped with lecture capture. Audio / visual capabilities depend on the type of room you are teaching in. You can find more information about this by visiting the time-tabling websites. Remember to visit the Facilities Support Services website if you have any more questions about the hardware in the teaching spaces.
Use this resource to help you use the equipment confidently and record an Ad-hoc Lecture. Academic staff may wish to attend training on using ad-hoc capture and for more information visit the websites associated with this recording.

How to make scheduled recordings available in the VLE
This is a tutorial for staff and Research Postgraduates on how to make scheduled lecture capture recordings viewable in the VLE.
In order for scheduled lecture capture recordings to take place, information needs to be programmed into the timetabling database. As well as the usual room booking information, recordings need to have at least one module code associated and will need to be assigned to you as the lecturer.
Recordings take place automatically and start 2 minutes after the booked start time and end 2 minutes before the booked end time.
Once you have finished your teaching session, your recording will be uploaded to the system and processed within 8 hours.
You will then be sent an email saying your recording is available.
Schedule recordings will automatically be set to Private. To approve your recording and allow students and other staff on the module to view it, select the dropdown labelled Private and change it to Viewable.

Introduction to Lecture Capture and Media Management 2017
This is short introduction to Lecture Capture and Media Management at the University of Leeds. It is most relevant for new staff to the University who wish to understand the concept of lecture capture; the four different types of recording; reviewing; editing; publishing and sharing content. The recording has been updated in Spring 2017 to reflect the changes in auto-publishing and external publishing.
If you don't know the differences between scheduled capture, ad-hoc capture, personal capture and mobile capture then this will be useful for you to watch.
Throughout the recording we recommend you select the i bottom right hand corner of the media player. This will give you a list of web resources that you can visit to support you in your exploration of Lecture Capture and Media Management. These resources are referred to in the recording.

A short podcast introducing the Leeds Institute of Teaching Excellence Masterclass: Gen. Y is so last millennium. Here comes Gen. Z by Professor Rebecca Huxley-Binns.
The challenges and opportunities universities face in how they engage with the next generation of students is the focus of this LITE Masterclass.
Rebecca Huxley-Binns, who is professor of Legal Education and Vice-Provost, Academic Enhancement, at the University of Law, lead the seminar at the University of Leeds.
Generation Z, as they have been coined, consist of those born in 1995 or later. A “Millennial”, or Generation Y, is a person reaching young adulthood around the year 2000.
Professor Huxley-Binns says: "I am not convinced universities have adapted to the challenges and opportunities that teaching Gen. Y brought us, and even if we adapt now, it will be too late. Gen. Z are biting at Gen. Y’s heels to enter higher education (HE) and start their careers."
So, what can we expect of Gen. Z? What expectations do Gen. Z’s have of HE and how are we going to adapt to the challenges of the future?

What type of content can I publish to VideoLeeds?
We encourage the publication of learning, teaching or research content aimed at supporting and enhancing the educational experience. Examples might include:
Copies or excerpts from timetabled lectures appropriate for a wider audience;
Research proposals or dissemination of research;
Public events and guest speakers;
Footage of visiting academics aimed at a general audience (please ensure all visiting academics have consented to the recording being publicly available and this has been agreed in writing);

Videos outlining lab techniques or unique examples of technology;
Animations to illustrate key concepts;

Three lecture theatres were redesigned in the summer of 2016 to provide enhanced teaching and learning opportunities for staff and students. Roger Stevens Lecture Theatre 8, Mechanical Engineering Lecture Theatre B and Worsley Dental Lecture Theatre have been redesigned with the latest in digital technology, seating, sound and lighting to improve collaborative and technologically enabled experiences for staff and students alike.
It is anticipated that the majority of students will enjoy attending more interactive lectures in these redesigned learning environments but what benefits are they really experiencing and how do we know? Roger Stevens Lecture Theatre 8, Mechanical Engineering Lecture Theatre B and Worsley Dental Lecture Theatre have been reconfigured with the latest in digital technology, seating, sound and lighting to improve collaboration and promote active learning.
It is anticipated that the majority of students will enjoy attending more interactive lectures in these redesigned learning environments but what benefits are they really experiencing and how do we know? What have been the initial responses by students in the last few months? What have been the challenges for lecturers and students and what solutions have been put in place to overcome these?

Share digital media from an iPad to Mediasite

This short tutorial explores how you can upload video content taken on an iPad directly into Mediasite. The process is similar no matter which smartphone or internet connected device you are using. Be aware that the longer your video the longer it will take to upload and ensure you are working in an environment with good wifi.
It is easier to review and edit your digital media using a PC, Mac or laptop.
Ensure you add a title, description, tags (keywords), presenter information and most importantly make your content "viewable" to share with others.

Starting your Career: Alternative ways to look for work

Are you a graduate of the University of Leeds or a final year student about to graduate? Are you currently job hunting or looking to change your career path?
While the COVID-19 pandemic has had an effect on the graduate recruitment market, there are signs that it’s not been hit as badly as some had predicted, and with the economy beginning to recover as the country opens up after lockdown, it’s a more encouraging time to be seeking work than this time last year.
To aid your job search, you can watch this fantastic event featuring a University of Leeds alum working in recruitment. Remember that in addition to this you still have access to a range of support from the Careers Service.
Beth Hancock works as a Recruitment Consultant at Headway Recruitment in Leeds and is a 2018 graduate of the University of Leeds. At this session, she’ll talk about her experiences job hunting as a recent graduate and how she got into her current role. She’ll also talk about alternative ways of looking for work including using recruitment agencies, the value of temporary work and using social media and LinkedIn.

This tutorial is for all staff and students who wish to create and upload existing digital content into Mediasite to edit and share with others; fellow students, supervisors, colleagues, research partners, future employers, University members or any member of the public.
Upload any MP3, QuickTime, AVI, Windows Media or MPEG-4 video recorded with other devices but make sure it is less than 2 Gigabytes in size. Mediasite does all the hard work encoding the content so that a good quality resource can be viewed in the browser window.

View and Play Lecture Capture Recordings
This is a tutorial for staff and students who have never accessed or viewed a lecture capture recording using the mediasite browser within the VLE.
Are you aware that you can search for specific recordings by title or list them in a particular order? Do you know that there is an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) feature within mediasite that allows you to search for keywords within a presentation so that you can skip to relevant parts of a recording?
This is a short presentation informing you how to find, view, play, search and navigate around all the recordings available to you within with the VLE.
