Alice Shepherd: My experiences teaching in a Collaborative Lecture Theatre
Alice talks about her experience of using flipped learning and the redesigned collaborative lecture theatres to support students on an interdisciplinary, non-specialist management accounting module. She explores the use of space, pedagogy and technology to make the learning more interactive and engaging for staff and tutors. The feedback from staff and students has been positive and Alice continues to enjoy developing her module with the principles of active learning and flipped pedagogies in mind. MP Harriet Harman gives the first Alice Bacon talk: 'From Pioneers to Parity? 100 Years of Female Suffrage'
The achievements of a pioneering Yorkshire MP Alice Bacon were commemorated with a public lecture by senior MP Harriet Harman. Alice Bacon was elected to represent Leeds North East in 1945 and served her city constituents continuously until her retirement a quarter of a century later (she transferred to Leeds South East when constituency boundaries were revised in 1955). Awarded a CBE in the 1953 Coronation Honours, she took up a seat in the Lords as a Baroness on her retirement as an MP in 1970. Leeds did not return another woman to the Commons until the election in 2010 of Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves, who is also Baroness Bacon’s biographer. Now Ms Reeves has teamed up with the School of Politics and International Studies at the University of Leeds, for the first in what will be a regular series of lectures in the name of her trailblazing forebear, aimed at commemorating the achievements of Leeds women – locally and nationally. Ms Harman’s lecture, From Pioneers to Parity? 100 Years of Female Suffrage, was given in the Great Hall at the University on Thursday 25 January. Read more: http://po.st/ucmuJO

The Implications of Genomic Medicine for Cancer Patients - Opportunities & Challenges
Scientists, patients and doctors are working together to identify the genes involved in cancers and develop new targeted treatments based on this information. A team of sociologists have been funded by a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award in Society and Ethics to investigate how these new approaches are changing research and patient care (see www.cancerandsociety.ac.uk for more information). As part of this programme of work the team have been researching the development of the Genomics Medicine Centre and the 100,000 Genomes Project in Yorkshire and the Humber. Together we have produced a short film to explore the opportunities and challenges of these initiatives with some of the key people involved in its leadership.
